Sophomore English builds on and reinforces what you learned in 9th Grade English including the elements of style (metaphors, similes, alliterations, etc.), the elements of fiction (plot, voice, tone, etc.), vocabulary (including the Latin roots), critical reading, and writing.
This year, we will review analytical writing skills which are used in response to literature essays as well as persuasive essays and speeches. Please click here for more information on California State Standards for 9th and 10th Grade.
Listening and speaking skills are an important part of the 9th and 10th grade curriculum. We will practice listening and speaking when sharing with partners, in philosophical chairs, and in Socratic Seminars.
Our reading list this year includes:
-
Sophocles’ Antigone
Erich Maria Remarque’s All Quiet on the Western Front
William Golding’s Lord of the Flies
Art Spiegelman’s Maus
William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar (this selection may be changed)
We are short on textbooks this year. If you wish to buy any of the above texts for your child, it would be very helpful for our classes.
