The California State Standards are the same for grades 9 and 10, which allows teachers at Castro Valley High School to build upon concepts and skills during these years.

We use the Three Levels of Reading to introduce a way of reading literature and writing about it:
Level 1 is literal information (facts; quotes; in the text)
Level 2 is inferential (between the lines; analysis)
Level 3 is applied (beyond the text; connecting knowledge to other contexts)
Additionally, I incorporate other reading literacy strategies such as visualizations, predictions, and “thinking aloud” while reading.
